Acibadem International Hospital marks 1,000th kidney transplant with outstanding success rate

TURKEY – Acibadem International Hospital recently performed its milestone 1,000th kidney transplant, marking a significant achievement for the Kidney Transplant Center, which has been operational for nearly eight years.

With an impressive success rate of 98%, the hospital continues to deliver life-saving treatments to patients with kidney failure.

Since the Kidney Transplant Program was launched in October 2010, Acibadem International Hospital has dedicated itself to providing high-quality care to patients requiring kidney transplants.

Over the past decade, the hospital has helped nearly 1,000 patients resume healthy, productive lives post-surgery.

We aim to provide our patients with the highest standards of care, and we’re proud to achieve a success rate that exceeds global standards,” said Prof. Dr. İbrahim Berber, Head of the Organ Transplant Department at Acibadem International Hospital.

Exceptional outcomes exceeding global standards

Globally, kidney transplant success rates are often measured by the function of the transplanted kidney and patient survival over time.

Centers of excellence report a 95% success rate for the first year, 90% for five years, and 60% for ten years.

In comparison, the Kidney Transplant Center at Acibadem boasts an exceptional 98% success rate at the one-year mark and 95% at five years.

Prof. Dr. Ülkem Çakır, Head of Nephrology at the hospital, emphasized the center’s goal to push these success rates even further, saying, “The goal and expectation of our center is to increase the success rate above 80% in the last 10 years.”

Kidney transplants are critical for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease, where the kidneys no longer function properly to filter toxins and regulate essential body processes.

While dialysis can serve as a temporary solution, transplants offer a higher quality of life and improved long-term survival compared to dialysis.

A successful kidney transplant involves placing a healthy kidney from a living or deceased donor into the recipient’s body.

The surgery, while complex, has a higher chance of success when performed at specialized centers like Acibadem, which offers advanced facilities and experienced medical teams.

Acıbadem’s growth in Uganda

Earlier this year, Acıbadem also inaugurated its first information office in Uganda, marking its 61st global health point.

The office, located at Acacia Mall in Kampala, underscores the healthcare group’s commitment to supporting the Ugandan healthcare system through patient referrals, capacity building, and skill enhancement for local health workers.

Dr. Jackson Ojera Abusu, Acıbadem’s Country Representative in Uganda, emphasized the significance of this partnership: “Acıbadem is here in Uganda to support, supplement, and complement government efforts in healthcare service delivery.”

The collaboration aims to elevate Uganda’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly through the introduction of advanced medical technologies and training programs.

Uganda’s Ambassador to Turkey, Her Excellency Nasura Tiperu, commended Acıbadem’s entry into the country, noting, “This office will not only serve Uganda but will be a coordination point for the entire East African market.”

Uganda has been selected to be the first East African country to have state-of-the-art Acibadem hospital infrastructure.

Advanced healthcare technology and expertise

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony in Kampala, Mr. Ilyas Benveniste, Director of International Business Development for Acıbadem, highlighted the healthcare group’s commitment to cutting-edge medical technology and patient care.

We ensure that patients receive the highest quality of care at every step of their journey,” said Benveniste.

He also stressed the group’s focus on innovation, stating, “Acıbadem harnesses the power of medical technology to deliver cutting-edge healthcare solutions.”

Acıbadem’s partnership with IHH Healthcare in 2012 enabled it to join the world’s second-largest healthcare chain.

With 24 hospitals and 15 outpatient clinics across five countries, Acıbadem is poised to continue its rapid expansion and foster international collaborations.

Turkey’s Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Mehmet Fatih Ak, expressed optimism about future Turkish investments in Uganda’s healthcare sector.

We congratulate the group and thank the Ugandan authorities for giving us this opportunity to be part of Uganda’s healthcare landscape,” he stated.

He acknowledged the potential of the collaboration, stating, “The first step of course is to bring in professionals from Turkey, and as long as we see there’s big potential in Uganda, then we will be interested in investments.”
