LEBANON – As Lebanon continues to grapple with the devastating impacts of prolonged conflict, many communities face escalating challenges, from disrupted healthcare services to a severe lack of basic necessities.
Amid this crisis, humanitarian organization Malteser International, in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is scaling up its commitment to support those affected.
Building on an established presence in Lebanon, Malteser International is intensifying efforts to deliver essential medical and humanitarian aid.
This expansion includes mobile healthcare units reaching people directly in emergency shelters and the distribution of vital supplies like blankets, hygiene items, and other sanitary materials to displaced families, addressing urgent needs in the hardest-hit areas.
In a crucial move to reach displaced and underserved populations, Malteser International, together with the Lebanese Order of Malta, has extended medical services from established health centers directly into emergency shelters.
This shift means that healthcare can be delivered where it’s needed most, even to those who have had to abandon their homes with little to no resources.
“Our colleagues from the Lebanese Order of Malta are currently working at the risk of their lives to provide medical care for the people. The additional support now enables us to provide care to even more people,” explained Lisa Kramer, Country Coordinator for Lebanon, who recently worked on-site in Beirut.
This expanded approach builds upon the organization’s long-standing commitment in Lebanon, where it has operated since 2012.
By prioritizing mobile and stationary healthcare services, Malteser International has responded to the worsening humanitarian situation and the rising demand for health support in Lebanon’s conflict zones.
On-the-ground support for war victims
With increased funding from BMZ, Malteser International has enhanced its aid operations, ensuring that approximately 1,000 families in emergency shelters now receive essential supplies like blankets, towels, hygiene products, and other sanitary materials.
These items, often overlooked yet critical, are tailored to help meet immediate needs among people who fled their homes with only the basics.
“In addition to health services, these supplies offer crucial support, ensuring people can maintain hygiene and comfort despite the severe conditions,” said Kramer.
“Each item, from blankets to towels, is essential in preventing illness and supporting basic dignity in overcrowded shelters.”
A broader mission of relief
Lebanon’s political instability and ongoing conflicts have strained healthcare systems, creating a high demand for comprehensive aid.
Malteser International’s expanding mission aligns with its core values of humanity, neutrality, and impartiality, addressing the needs of all people affected by conflict, regardless of their background.
“Our focus on providing both health and humanitarian aid aims to create a buffer against the daily hardships these communities face. Health is not just about medical treatment; it’s about ensuring people have the basics to survive and rebuild,” Kramer added.
Decade-long commitment to Lebanon
Malteser International has been working in Lebanon for over a decade, delivering crucial aid and working with the Lebanese Order of Malta to improve healthcare and nutrition.
Their initiatives, including the operation of agricultural centers to bolster food security, exemplify their enduring commitment to improving the health and living conditions of people affected by the ongoing crises in the region.
As the humanitarian aid organization of the Catholic Order of Malta, Malteser International fulfills its mission to “help those in need” through more than 140 projects in 37 countries, including Lebanon.
Their work is rooted in Christian values and universal humanitarian principles, helping displaced and suffering populations worldwide without discrimination.
Each project is informed by principles of independence, impartiality, and dedication to humanitarian support.
