IRELAND – Medtronic has acquired nano surface technology from Nanovis to enhance its next-generation spine fusion implants.
This FDA-cleared technology is designed to improve bone growth and implant fixation, making it a valuable addition to Medtronic’s expanding spine surgery portfolio.
Advancing spine fusion with nanotechnology
Nanovis specializes in nanotechnology for orthopedic and spinal implants. The company developed a nanotube-based scaffold infused with calcium and phosphate, helping bone fuse more effectively with implants.
Its Adaptix PEEK interbody system, cleared by the FDA in 2023, has already demonstrated improved spinal implant stability.
Now, Medtronic will integrate this advanced technology into its PEEK interbody fusion devices for better bone integration.
According to Nanovis CEO Brian More, Medtronic’s global presence and commercial scale make it an ideal partner to bring this innovation to market.
“Combining our nano surface technology with Medtronic’s PEEK implant designs will provide surgeons with best-in-class devices to improve patient outcomes,” More said.
Medtronic’s growth in the spine market
This acquisition aligns with Medtronic’s recent success in the spine sector, where the company reported a 7% growth in U.S. core spine and biologics.
Medtronic has focused on building a comprehensive portfolio, incorporating planning software, imaging, robotics, navigation, and surgical instruments to improve spinal surgeries.
Medtronic’s CEO Geoff Martha highlighted this shift toward technology-driven solutions in an earnings call, stating, “We’re seeing a bit of market expansion here. We’re also seeing a bit of market consolidation.”
He emphasized that the spine market is moving toward companies with scale and innovation, allowing Medtronic to strengthen its leadership position.
At the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, Martha reiterated that financial strength and advanced technology are now essential for success in the evolving spinal implant market. He noted that this shift is driving the strongest growth the spine sector has seen in decades.
Integration of Sites Medical’s OsteoSync Titanium Pads
As part of the deal, Medtronic has also secured rights to Sites Medical’s OsteoSync titanium pads. These will be incorporated into Medtronic’s next-generation PEEK interbody fusion devices, further enhancing bone integration and implant stability.
Nanovis, known for innovations in nano surface engineering, sees this partnership as a major milestone.
“This collaboration highlights the clinical value of our nano surface technology,” More said. “With Medtronic’s global reach and innovation, these advancements will now be commercialized at scale.”
