Race heats up for WHO Africa regional director role

CONGO – The World Health Organization (WHO) is preparing to elect a new Regional Director for Africa following the unexpected passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile of Tanzania in November 2024, just days before he was set to assume office.

The election is scheduled for May 18, 2025, in Geneva. Five candidates have been nominated by their respective countries:

  • Professor Mohamed Janabi (Tanzania): A renowned cardiologist and Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, Prof. Janabi is also a senior health advisor to President Samia Suluhu Hassan. He emphasizes strengthening universal health coverage, enhancing pandemic preparedness, and promoting Africa’s health sovereignty through innovative financing and local pharmaceutical production.
  • Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa (Togo): Former Health Minister of Togo and Chair of the Africa CDC Governing Board, Prof. Mijiyawa is recognized for advancing universal healthcare and leading disease prevention efforts across the continent.
  • Dr. Mohamed Lamine Drame (Guinea): Dr. Drame focuses on strengthening disease surveillance and outbreak response systems. He advocates for increased investment in health infrastructure and workforce training to build resilience.
  • Dr. Michel Yao (Côte d’Ivoire): An expert in infectious disease control, Dr. Yao highlights the importance of international collaboration to address Africa’s health challenges and strengthen health systems.
  • Dr. Boureima Hama Sambo (Niger): Initially nominated, Dr. Sambo has since withdrawn his candidacy.

The selection process includes a virtual candidates’ forum held on April 2, 2025, allowing each nominee to present their vision and strategies for improving health outcomes across Africa.

The final decision will be made through a secret ballot by the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, with the appointed director serving a five-year term, renewable once.

This election comes at a critical time as Africa continues to face challenges such as emerging infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and the need for robust healthcare systems.

The new Regional Director will play a pivotal role in shaping the continent’s health policies and responses to these pressing issues.

Observers note that Tanzania’s nomination of Prof. Janabi may garner sympathy and support due to the recent loss of Dr. Ndugulile.

However, the competition remains strong, with each candidate bringing unique experiences and perspectives to the role.
