KENYA – Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital in Nairobi has unveiled a modern Radiology Centre dedicated to providing advanced imaging services designed specifically for children.
This new facility marks a significant step forward in pediatric diagnostics, combining cutting-edge technology with a focus on comfort, safety, and quality care.
The Radiology Centre is equipped with top-tier imaging tools, including MRI, CT, ultrasound, digital X-ray, and fluoroscopy.
A key highlight is the installation of a new 1.5 Tesla Philips MRI scanner. This state-of-the-art system delivers clear, high-resolution images while ensuring a more comfortable experience for young patients.
It also features advanced motion-reduction software to help scan children who may find it hard to remain still during procedures.
Additionally, the scanner uses a helium-free cooling system, making it environmentally friendly and energy efficient.
Gertrude’s Radiology Centre has been designed to minimize waiting times and reduce radiation exposure through the use of digital technology.
The hospital is moving toward a filmless setup with Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) and Computed Radiography (CR), which speeds up image processing and report delivery.
The department operates under the strict guidelines of the Kenya Radiation Protection Board and undergoes regular quality audits and safety checks to protect both patients and staff.
This strong focus on safety is matched by a deep commitment to excellence, as seen in the hospital’s re-accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI), a global symbol of healthcare quality and patient safety.
Beyond imaging services, the Centre is a hub for learning and innovation. It works closely with the University of Nairobi’s Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine to support research and training in pediatric radiology.
This partnership helps shape the next generation of imaging professionals and promotes best practices in the field.
In line with its mission to make specialist care accessible to all children, Gertrude’s also offers telemedicine services through the Daktari Smart program.
This initiative allows children in remote areas to receive expert consultations and diagnostics using digital health platforms, bridging critical gaps in healthcare delivery across the country.
Since its establishment in 1947, Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital has been at the forefront of pediatric healthcare in Africa.
