Apollo Hospitals marks 500 robotic cardiac surgeries, expands heart care with TAVI (2)

INDIA – Apollo Hospitals has reached a significant milestone by performing over 500 robotic-assisted cardiac surgeries.

In addition, the hospital now offers Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), a minimally invasive procedure for treating severe aortic stenosis (AS).

These cutting-edge methods aim to enhance survival rates and minimize complications, providing better outcomes for patients with complex heart conditions.

Robotic-assisted surgeries have transformed heart care by offering a less invasive alternative to traditional open-heart procedures.

Dr. M.M. Yusuf, a leading cardiac surgeon at Apollo Hospitals Chennai, explained the benefits of this technology.

He said, “Robotic cardiac surgery allows for faster recovery, less pain, and fewer complications compared to conventional methods.

Patients can return to their daily lives within two weeks, which is a drastic improvement over the months required for open-heart surgery.”

This technique not only reduces scarring and trauma to surrounding tissues but also significantly lowers the risk of infections, making it particularly beneficial for younger patients and those with health risks that limit surgical options.

The use of robotic technology has enabled Apollo Hospitals to perform a variety of heart surgeries, including coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repairs or replacements, and the removal of cardiac tumors.

Notably, of the 507 robotic surgeries conducted between June 2019 and October 2024, 460 were CABG procedures.

The impact of robotic surgery on younger and elderly patients

According to Dr. Yusuf, a large portion of the patients benefiting from robotic cardiac surgeries are aged 40 to 60.

“Many of these patients are the breadwinners of their families. Robotic surgeries allow them to return to work within two to three weeks, which would have been impossible with traditional surgery,” he noted.

The advanced technique is also a viable option for elderly patients who may not tolerate open-heart surgery due to other health conditions.

Dr. Sathyaki P. Nambala, chief surgeon of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery at Apollo Hospitals Bengaluru, emphasized that India is a leader in robotic heart surgery.

He said, “With robotic surgery, the surgeon gains a 3D view and uses precision tools, reducing the size of the incision to as small as the tip of a finger. Patients benefit from quicker recovery and can often leave the hospital within 24 hours.”

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

Apollo Hospitals is also offering TAVI, a minimally invasive treatment for severe aortic stenosis, which replaces damaged valves without the need for open-heart surgery.

Cardiologist Dr. G. Sengottuvelu highlighted the importance of early intervention for patients with aortic stenosis.

Severe aortic stenosis can severely limit daily activities and lead to life-threatening complications if left untreated. Our less invasive approach through TAVI greatly improves outcomes, enhancing both quality of life and survival rates,” he said.

The hospital uses India-made valves for TAVI procedures, ensuring cost-effective care for patients. By leveraging these advanced treatments, Apollo Hospitals continues to push the boundaries of heart care in India.

The cardiac surgery team at Apollo Hospitals, led by Dr. Yusuf, has consistently delivered better outcomes through robotic surgery.

Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, founder-chairman of Apollo Hospitals Group, noted, “Robotic heart surgeries have not only improved outcomes but also reduced complications and shortened hospital stays. Our team is committed to providing world-class care with the latest technology.
