Avista buys EBI bone healing division from Highridge Medical

USA – Avista Healthcare Partners, a private equity firm focused solely on healthcare, has acquired EBI, the bone healing division of Highridge Medical, in a strategic deal aimed at growing its medical technology portfolio.

This move marks Avista’s 50th healthcare platform investment. EBI specializes in FDA-approved bone growth stimulation therapies, offering both non-invasive and implantable solutions for patients undergoing spine, orthopedic, or podiatric treatments.

With the acquisition complete, EBI will now operate as a standalone company supported by Avista.

Highridge Medical, which split from ZimVie as a focused spine business, said selling EBI allows it to double down on its core spinal technologies.

CEO Rebecca Whitney explained that the move supports the company’s strategy to invest more deeply in spine innovation and commercial growth.

“We are thankful to the EBI team and confident they will continue to thrive under Avista’s leadership,” she said.

The transaction reflects a broader industry trend of major medtech firms divesting spine-related assets. In April 2024, ZimVie sold its entire spine division to H.I.G. Capital for US$ 375 million.

Similarly, Stryker announced its exit from the spinal implant business earlier this year, selling the unit to Viscogliosi Brothers, which created a new company called VB Spine.

Now based in Parsippany, New Jersey, EBI continues to focus on electrobiology and bone regeneration devices. Leading the next phase of its growth is Kevin Kenny, who has been appointed CEO.

Kenny previously served as President of the Global Spine segment at Orthofix Medical, where he oversaw spinal implants, bone healing therapies, and biologics.

“I’m excited to lead EBI as it becomes an independent company,” said Kenny. “Our mission is to strengthen our role as an innovator in bone healing science, with a clear focus on improving patient outcomes.”

With the deal finalized, Avista aims to support EBI in expanding its product reach and deepening its commitment to patient care through technology-driven healing solutions.
