USA – Amazon Web Services (AWS) has teamed up with investment firm General Catalyst to co-develop and implement AI-powered solutions targeting critical healthcare needs such as predictive and personalized care, interoperability, operational and clinical efficiency, diagnostics, and patient engagement.

The partnership will leverage generative AI technologies, utilizing Amazon Bedrock, Anthropic, and Mistral AI, along with healthcare-specific models trained securely to address these areas.

The collaboration positions AWS as General Catalyst’s preferred cloud provider, offering healthcare systems scalable, flexible tools supported by AWS’s extensive service functionality, innovative pace, reliability, security, and data privacy.

AWS will also contribute its vast experience in deploying AI and machine learning across its large healthcare and life sciences customer base, as well as specialized services tailored to these sectors, including AWS HealthScribe, AWS HealthOmics, and AWS HealthImaging.

General Catalyst’s portfolio companies, Commure and Aidoc, will integrate their specialized technology solutions—Copilot Suite and aiOS—into AWS’s AI and data capabilities.

This integration will help health systems deploy advanced cloud services designed to address urgent needs at speed and scale.

Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, emphasized the impact of AI on global healthcare, stating, “AWS and General Catalyst believe that AI has immense potential to affect meaningful change in global healthcare. Together, we are taking bold steps to improve patient outcomes and make quality care more accessible to all by embedding AI throughout the care journey.”

Hemant Taneja, CEO of General Catalyst, highlighted the transformative potential of the partnership: “At General Catalyst, we’ve witnessed firsthand how technologies like AI, applied with the right approach to scaling and problem-solving, can drive real transformation in health care.

AWS shares our bold vision for advancing human health through cutting-edge technology. Together, we believe this work will establish a flywheel of innovation and adoption that can be applied to other industries.”

The larger trend

In 2024, GE HealthCare entered into a strategic partnership with AWS to leverage its healthcare and generative AI services, aiming to enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline operations, and improve equitable access to care.

GE HealthCare utilized Amazon Bedrock’s foundation models to build proprietary AI applications and modernize its Amazon SageMaker applications.

In the same year, General Catalyst closed a US $8 billion capital raise, including US $6 billion for Fund XII and US $2 billion in separately managed accounts.

This funding is driving investments across sectors, including AI, healthcare, defense, climate, and fintech.

Additionally, General Catalyst expanded its General Catalyst Institute into India in 2024, focusing on AI’s role in addressing societal challenges.

The institute also works with policymakers to strengthen India’s telemedicine and pharmaceutical sectors, aiming to impact global healthcare.

Lastly, General Catalyst and Summa Health signed a definitive agreement in 2024 for the US $485 million acquisition of Summa, which included the reduction of US $850 million in existing debt for the health system.
