Illumina confirms 96 layoffs as part of restructuring plan

USA – Illumina, a leading DNA sequencing company, will lay off 96 employees at its San Diego headquarters starting in April 2025, according to a recent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing in California.

Employees were informed by February 12, and the job cuts will take effect between April and August. A company spokesperson clarified that this is not a large-scale reduction but part of a restructuring process.

“We have created new roles and reduced others,” the spokesperson stated. “Illumina continues to invest in advancing our strategy while ensuring our structure, talent, and costs align to support it.”

Recent layoffs and restructuring

This is not the first round of job cuts for Illumina. The company previously laid off 49 employees between October 2024 and January 2025 and 111 employees in March 2024.

These reductions are part of a broader effort to streamline operations and boost profitability under CEO Jacob Thaysen.

Thaysen took over as CEO in September 2023 after activist investor Carl Icahn challenged the company’s leadership over its controversial Grail acquisition. Illumina later spun off Grail in June 2024 following regulatory opposition.

Earlier this year, Thaysen told investors that Illumina had cut about 12% of its global workforce over the past year as part of cost-saving measures.

The latest layoffs affect employees in various roles, including scientists, engineers, managers, analysts, and technicians.

At the end of 2024, Illumina had approximately 8,970 full-time employees and 60 part-time workers, excluding Grail. This number was down from 9,250 full-time employees the previous year.

Medtech industry layoffs

Illumina is not the only medtech company facing job cuts. Many firms have reduced their workforce due to profit pressures and shifting market priorities.

  • Staar Surgical recently announced plans to lay off 115 employees at its California facilities.
  • Thermo Fisher Scientific will cut 300 jobs across two locations in Massachusetts.
  • A MedTech Dive analysis found that over 14,000 layoffs occurred across the medical technology sector from January 2023 to mid-2024.
