KMPDU applauds Dr. Ouma Oluga’s nomination as Medical Services PS

KENYA – The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) has welcomed the nomination of former Secretary General Dr. Ouma Oluga as the Principal Secretary (PS) for the State Department for Medical Services.

His appointment, announced by President William Ruto on Thursday, March 20, is expected to play a vital role in advancing the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

In a statement, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah praised Oluga’s leadership and dedication, emphasizing that his appointment is a well-earned recognition of his contributions to Kenya’s healthcare system.

“KMPDU congratulates Dr. Ouma Oluga on his nomination as the PS for the State Department for Medical Services. His new role is a well-deserved recognition of his unwavering commitment and expertise,” Atellah stated.

The union expressed confidence that Oluga’s leadership would bring much-needed reforms to the Ministry of Health and improve service delivery in the healthcare sector.

“We are confident that he will bring the same passion, vigor, and diligence to the Ministry of Health, ensuring meaningful progress in our healthcare system,” KMPDU said.

A Proven leader in healthcare reforms

During his tenure as KMPDU Secretary General, Oluga played a key role in advocating for the rights and welfare of healthcare workers.

His leadership was particularly notable during the 2017 doctors’ strike, which resulted in improved working conditions and better terms of service for medical practitioners.

“Oluga’s dedication and leadership during his tenure as KMPDU Secretary General played a pivotal role in advancing both the union and the broader health sector in Kenya,” the statement added.

His nomination comes at a crucial time when Kenya’s healthcare system faces significant challenges, including the implementation of the new Social Health Authority (SHA), which has encountered various hurdles.

Stakeholders now look to Oluga to drive much-needed reforms and strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

Key executive changes announced by Ruto

Dr. Oluga’s appointment was among several key changes in the Executive made by President Ruto.

Other notable appointments include Jane Kare Imbuya, who will head the State Department for Public Service & Human Capital Development, and Regina Akoth Ombam, who takes over the State Department for Trade.

Additional appointments include Caroline Wanjiru Karugu to the East Africa Community docket and Cyrell Wagunda Odede to Public Investment & Assets Management.

In a significant reshuffle, the Broadcasting and Telecommunications docket also saw changes, with Edward Kisiangani being reassigned as a senior advisor to the president on economic matters.

Former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha, who had previously voiced concerns about being jobless, has been appointed Kenya’s envoy to the UN-Habitat.

Additionally, former Pwani University student leader Fikiri Katoi Kahindi, known for his activism, secured the position of PS for Youth Affairs.

Long-serving Principal Secretary for Basic Education Belio Kipsang also swapped roles with Immigration PS Julius Bitok in another major reshuffle.
