Moroccan surgeons achieve landmark tricuspid valve surgery in Rabat

MOROCCO – Moroccan doctors have achieved a major milestone in heart surgery by successfully performing the country’s first tricuspid valve repair at Moulay Youssef Hospital in Rabat.

The five-hour procedure was led by Professor Mohamed El Aaroussi, head of the cardiac surgery department at Ibn Sina University Hospital, and involved a specialized medical team.

The tricuspid valve, located between the right atrium and the right ventricle of the heart, ensures that blood flows in one direction.

Tricuspid valve insufficiency, also called tricuspid regurgitation, occurs when the valve does not close properly, causing blood to leak back into the atrium.

This condition can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, swelling in the legs or abdomen, and irregular heartbeats. If untreated, it can result in heart failure.

A complex and precise surgical procedure

Tricuspid valve surgery is a delicate and highly specialized operation, usually performed in university hospitals equipped with advanced facilities.

The Moroccan medical team took a careful approach to treat the 63-year-old patient, ensuring precision and coordination throughout the procedure.

“This surgery required a high level of skill and focus due to the complexity of the condition,” the Moroccan Ministry of Health stated.

The ministry also described the surgery as a “significant milestone in heart and vascular surgery in Morocco.”

The medical team consisted of experienced doctors and nurses from Moulay Youssef Hospital, highlighting Morocco’s growing expertise in specialized medical treatments.

Strengthening Morocco’s healthcare system

This medical achievement is part of Morocco’s broader efforts to modernize its healthcare system and reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment.

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection has been working to improve medical services and introduce more advanced procedures in public hospitals.

The ministry praised the skills of Moroccan medical professionals, stating, “This success demonstrates the high level of expertise among our medical and nursing staff, as well as their ability to handle complex medical cases while maintaining top-quality standards.”

Moulay Youssef Hospital’s role in this breakthrough strengthens its reputation as one of Morocco’s leading medical institutions, particularly in the field of heart and vascular medicine.

The ministry emphasized that the hospital has “advanced medical capabilities,” making it a key center for cardiac care.

This surgery is part of Morocco’s continuous investment in its public healthcare system. The Ministry of Health highlighted that such advancements reflect the country’s ability to provide high-quality medical care to its citizens.

“The success of this procedure proves that Morocco is making significant progress in delivering world-class healthcare,” the ministry concluded.
