KENYA – The Nairobi Hospital Board has appointed Dr. Barcley Onyambu as its new chairman, ushering in a new leadership era aimed at strengthening governance and ethical standards.
Onyambu, an experienced obstetrician and gynecologist, has been a board member since 2024 and has led key committees such as Human Resources, Infrastructure, and Audit and Risk.
According to a statement by the hospital, his appointment reflects the Board’s commitment to continuous improvement in healthcare delivery.
“Dr. Onyambu brings extensive experience in healthcare governance and leadership,” the statement read. He holds a Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology and has advanced healthcare management training from Strathmore University.
The Board also expressed appreciation to the outgoing chairman, Chris M. N. Bichage, for his service over the past year and a half.
Nairobi Hospital, a leading non-profit healthcare institution in East Africa, has built a strong reputation for advanced diagnostics, treatment, and specialized medical care.
It has pioneered several medical milestones in Kenya and the region, including the first private nursing training college, the first diploma in theatre nursing, and groundbreaking procedures like hip replacements and pacemaker fittings.
Dr. Onyambu currently serves as the lead consultant at ANKH Women’s Health Clinic. His appointment comes at a time when Nairobi Hospital is facing a legal challenge regarding the election of board directors and trustees.
Nairobi Hospital legal battle
On February 15, a court issued temporary orders suspending the implementation of a resolution on the election of directors and trustees from December 4, 2024. The suspension remains in effect until the case is heard and determined.
Despite the legal dispute, the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA), which manages Nairobi Hospital, assured patients that the facility will continue providing quality healthcare.
Acting CEO Felix Osano stated that the hospital will comply with the court order while seeking legal solutions.
The case was filed by Dr. Samuel Muchiri, a medical doctor and KHA member, who contested the election process and its outcomes.
Osano took over as acting CEO following the departure of former KHA CEO James Nyamongo, whose contract ended on December 6, 2024.
