Siemens Healthineers expands Photon Counting CT portfolio with FDA approval

USA – Siemens Healthineers has received FDA clearance for its expanded Naeotom Alpha series of photon-counting computed tomography (CT) scanners, introducing new models designed to enhance diagnostic imaging capabilities across various clinical settings.

The newly approved lineup includes:

  • Naeotom Alpha.Pro: A dual-source system offering a scan speed of 491 mm/sec, beneficial for pediatric and cardiology patients by reducing breath-hold times and minimizing the need for sedation or beta-blockers.
  • Naeotom Alpha.Prime: The first commercially available single-source photon-counting CT scanner, scanning at 345 mm/sec, equipped with automation features to streamline workflows.

These additions complement the existing Naeotom Alpha.Peak (formerly the original Naeotom Alpha), which remains the flagship model with the fastest scan speed of 737 mm/sec and Quantum HD resolution at a 0.2 mm slice thickness.

Photon-counting CT technology enables direct measurement of individual X-ray photons, enhancing image resolution and functional imaging while reducing radiation exposure.

This advancement allows for improved visualization of small anatomical structures with fewer artifacts compared to conventional CT scanners.

Matthew Dedman, head of computed tomography at Siemens Healthineers North America, stated, “By introducing our Naeotom Alpha class of photon-counting CT scanners, Siemens Healthineers delivers on what we see as our responsibility: to broaden the availability of this technology and enable customers to provide its clinical benefits to as many clinicians and patients as possible.”

The Naeotom Alpha.Prime integrates Siemens Healthineers’ AI-powered myExam Companion interface, assisting with exam setup, image acquisition, and post-processing.

This feature aims to standardize and simplify CT operations across different patient types and procedures, enhancing efficiency and consistency in imaging practices.

With over a million patient scans completed worldwide since the Naeotom Alpha’s initial launch in 2021, the expanded lineup signifies Siemens Healthineers’ commitment to advancing CT imaging technology and making high-resolution, low-dose imaging more accessible to diverse healthcare environments.
