GERMANY – Siemens Healthineers has entered into a transformative 10-year, US $105 million partnership with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
The collaboration aims to transform imaging technology for diagnosing and treating cancer, cardiac, and neurological conditions.
This collaboration encompasses cutting-edge equipment purchases, consulting services, and workforce development programs.
Central to the agreement is the creation of a Center for Imaging Excellence, a multidisciplinary hub bringing together researchers, clinicians, engineers, and learners to develop and implement innovative imaging solutions for critical health challenges.
Dr. John J. Warner, CEO of The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, emphasized the potential impact:
“Combining the strengths of both our institutions allows us to achieve more for the benefit of our patients, locally and globally. Along with Siemens Healthineers, we can solve medical challenges and adapt therapies in real time for the betterment of our patients.”
A decade of innovation
The long-standing partnership between Siemens Healthineers and Ohio State spans over 15 years, during which they have collaborated on advanced imaging technologies.
This includes groundbreaking innovations such as low-field MRI techniques for cardiac imaging and methods for detecting cardiac inflammation.
David Pacitti, president and head of Siemens Healthineers Americas, highlighted the significance of the collaboration:
“Not only are we providing advanced imaging and other modalities, but through our research collaboration, we’re also co-developing technologies that can save and improve patients’ lives.”
The new Center for Imaging Excellence will integrate Siemens’ imaging equipment, including MRI, CT, molecular imaging, and radiation oncology technologies, with translational research initiatives from Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center, Heart and Vascular Center, and Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC – James).
This collaboration aims to fast-track practical innovations to clinical use, benefiting both local and global healthcare systems.
Siemens’ broader healthcare partnerships
This announcement comes as Siemens Healthineers expands its global footprint through similar long-term partnerships.
In France, Siemens has partnered with the University Hospital Nantes in a €55 million (US $ 57.6 million), 12-year Value Partnership.
Dubbed PIMENT (Partenariat pour l’Imagerie Médicale des Établissements du Territoire 44), the program includes the installation of state-of-the-art imaging technologies such as photon-counting CT scanners and helium-efficient MRI systems across 13 hospitals in the Loire-Atlantique region.
The Nantes initiative also integrates sustainability efforts, extending equipment life cycles and reducing resource usage, including helium consumption for MRI systems.
According to Bernd Ohnesorge, president of Siemens Healthineers for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, the program exemplifies their commitment to transforming healthcare delivery:
“This long-term partnership highlights our strategy to collaborate with leading healthcare providers to support them in shaping the transformation of healthcare.”
