CONGO – Tanzania’s Professor Mohamed Janabi is among five candidates competing for the position of World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa.
If successful, he will become the first Tanzanian to hold the position. The election, set for the end of March 2025, will determine the new leader responsible for overseeing public health programs and policies across Africa.
Prof. Janabi, currently the Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, was officially nominated by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan in December 2024.
The nomination followed the sudden passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, a fellow Tanzanian who was initially chosen for the role but passed away before assuming office.
President Hassan expressed confidence in Janabi’s qualifications, stating, “We reviewed many CVs, and we decided that yours is the one we can submit for the WHO competition.”
The WHO Regional Director for Africa is a critical position responsible for coordinating health initiatives, strengthening healthcare systems, and responding to public health emergencies across the continent.
The election process involves African member states voting for their preferred candidate, with the winning nominee taking office for a five-year term.
Janabi’s long career in medicine and leadership strengthens his candidacy. As the head of Muhimbili National Hospital, he has overseen major improvements in healthcare services, hospital management, and medical training.
His background in cardiology and hospital administration positions him as a strong contender for the WHO leadership role.
Other Candidates for WHO Africa Regional Director:
- Dr. N’da Konan Michel Yao (Côte d’Ivoire): A renowned researcher and academic, Dr. Yao has made significant contributions to public health, particularly in infectious disease research across Africa. His collaborations with WHO and other global institutions have provided vital insights into disease dynamics and public health emergencies.
- Dr. Dramé Mohammed Lamine (Guinea): A seasoned public health expert with vast experience in disease prevention and healthcare system strengthening. Dr. Lamine has played a key role in advancing maternal and child health initiatives, particularly in West Africa, and in tackling diseases such as malaria and other infectious illnesses.
- Dr. Boureima Hama Sambo (Niger): With extensive experience in public health, Dr. Sambo has been instrumental in implementing health policies and programs in Niger. His work has focused on improving healthcare delivery and addressing public health challenges in the region.
- Prof. Mijiyawa Moustafa (Togo): A distinguished medical professional, Prof. Moustafa has contributed significantly to Togo’s healthcare system. His leadership has been crucial in advancing medical education and healthcare services in the country.
The race for the WHO Africa leadership is expected to be highly competitive, with each candidate bringing unique expertise and experience to the table.
However, Tanzania remains optimistic about Janabi’s chances. President Hassan and the Tanzanian government have expressed their commitment to supporting his candidacy.
The final decision will be made during the WHO Regional Committee meeting in March 2025, where African health ministers will cast their votes.
The chosen candidate will officially assume office later in the year, taking on the responsibility of guiding Africa’s health policies and programs.
