USA – Terumo Interventional Systems has expanded its radial-to-peripheral (R2P) portfolio with the U.S. launch of the R2P NaviCross peripheral support catheter, aiming to enhance the management of peripheral artery disease (PAD) and critical limb ischemia.
The new 200 cm catheter introduces a double-braided, stainless-steel design to optimize trackability, torque control, and lesion crossing, particularly in complex procedures.
Radial access, which involves using the radial artery in the wrist as an entry point for interventions in peripheral vasculature, has gained momentum as a minimally invasive alternative to femoral access.
It reduces bleeding, vascular complications, costs, and hospital stays.
According to Dr. Michael Martinelli, Chief Medical Officer of Terumo Medical Corporation, the R2P NaviCross “provides physicians a valuable tool to safely and efficiently complete more procedures from a radial approach” while addressing complex lesions both above and below the knee.
“Our customers have been asking for a longer length, high-performance NaviCross support catheter, and I am proud to say we answered the need by delivering R2P NaviCross to the market, further enhancing our radial-to-peripheral portfolio,” Ghada Farah, division president of Terumo Interventional Systems, said in the news release.
“R2P NaviCross solidifies Terumo’s leadership in radial access, particularly as the demand for procedures to treat peripheral artery disease (PAD) and critical limb ischemia continues to rise.”
Design innovations for complex interventions
The R2P NaviCross catheter integrates features that prioritize clinical versatility:
- Double-braided stainless steel: Ensures high pushability and torque control, enabling seamless lesion crossing.
- Hydrophilic coating and tapered distal tip: Facilitates smoother guidewire-to-catheter transitions, improving crossability in challenging anatomies.
- Angled and straight tip options: Offers precision when navigating vascular branches.
The catheter complements Terumo’s broader R2P portfolio, including other specialized tools like the R2P Destination Slender guiding sheath and R2P Misago self-expanding stent, designed to simplify radial-first interventions for PAD patients.
Clinical relevance and future implications
Radial access has been demonstrated to improve clinical outcomes for PAD patients.
A recent study sponsored by Terumo highlighted its safety and efficacy, with no serious access site complications observed and high rates of same-day discharges.
Such advancements are particularly significant as the prevalence of PAD and critical limb ischemia grows, underscoring the importance of less invasive treatment options.
Now available in a 200 cm length, the R2P NaviCross catheter is double-braided, stainless-steel construction is meant to provide superior trackability and torque control for lesion crossing in more complex procedures, according to a Terumo news release.
