Thompson, who had served as UnitedHealthcare’s CEO since 2021, had been with the company since 2004.

His death on December 4th sparked widespread debate about the U.S. healthcare system, particularly insurance practices, as many Americans expressed anger over rising healthcare costs and what they perceive as unfair treatment by insurance firms. The killing has brought heightened scrutiny to the industry.

UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, expressed confidence in Noel, stating he “brings unparalleled experience to this role with a proven track record and strong commitment to improving healthcare for all partners, including consumers, physicians, employers, and governments.”

Luigi Mangione, 26, has been arrested in connection with Thompson’s death and faces 11 counts, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and other weapon-related charges.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state murder and terror charges, and he also faces federal charges that could result in the death penalty.

Following the shooting, many companies began taking steps to protect their executives, including increasing security and removing photos of top leaders from their websites.
